Oh yes, it’s the time of year when we not only pause to celebrate, but also to think about who we are and what we want to be going forward. It’s 2020 New Year Resolution time.
Well here’s 5 commitments you can make, from today, which will help you and others to stay safe in 2020.
1. Carry a small First Aid Kit
Whether you are a qualified first-aider or not, there are two casualties who will need help from somebody immediately.
If someone cannot breath or is suffering catastrophic bleeding, they will die, quickly.
Carry with you three first aid items which will help you:
- Rubber gloves to protect you when you treat any casualty.
- A CPR Resuscitation Face Mask
- Emergency Trauma Dressing Bandage
To learn about how to treat the casualties you can read Street Safe Thinking – Habit 6.
2. Take a Breath
When somebody cuts you up on the road; when they knock into you, when they spill their drink across your dress; or for any of the other millions of potential flashpoints, take a breath.
Tell your emotional self, your Chimp, that you will pause, take a deep breath and then respond in a measured manner.
Through doing this you will limit the potential conflict points in your life.
3. Tell Others
You may be tough, able to look after yourself and largely self sufficient. You are not, however, an island.
Tell others where you are going and who you will be with. Not so they can judge you, that doesn’t matter, but so they can be part of the group who keeps an eye out for you.
Tell someone when you are going out, when you are leaving the club, getting into a taxi, walking home or travelling out of town.
Also tell others when you have a problem. They don’t have to be your friend. Nowadays there are many charities and organisations whose missions are to support others.
Make 2020 the year when you will communicate.
4. Find the Exits
How many hundreds or thousands of buildings will you move in and out of in the next year.
2019 has been another year of terrible business fires and some terror attacks.
When you enter a building in 2020 take 20 seconds to locate the emergency exits, not just the way you came into the building.
Whenever you travel with someone who needs support, children, disabled or elderly, then make sure you identify exits that they can use.
5. Watch what you put on Social Media
We all like to tell others how well we are doing, where we are and what we have just bought or done.
Keep using social media but be careful. Whenever you publish a picture of you and your belongings, or a post of you on holiday, you are potentially providing information which burglars can use to target you and your home.
Limit who can see your posts and only include those things you are happy can be known to the whole world.
